Polyurethane is a synthetic material that creates from petroleum. The simplest, least expensive and best quality embroidery threads are those made from polyester. These threads are robust, durable and easy to work with fabric. However, when washing polyester embroidery floss, be aware that it may become fuzzy or puffy, so you may have to clean it separately from other fabrics.

Wool blends are the following best and more expensive type of thread for machine embroidery patches. The size of embroidery patches you choose to make will depend on the size of the hoop you use. Smaller hoops, like six inches in diameter, should be made out of lightweight fabrics. Fabric that is heavily woven or heavily embellished will prove less practical for machine embroidery patches.
