Use the steps in this document to troubleshoot wired home network issues in Windows 7. Test the network connection after performing each step.
If the problem is not fixed, continue to the next step. Step 1: Complete the network connection checklist to troubleshoot network issues Many network connection issues are caused by problems with the cables or firewall settings. Use the following checklist to solve these problems with home networks:. Check all of the network cables and wires. A loose or disconnected cable or wire prevents a network connection and Internet access.
Check the following connections:. Network cable from the modem to the network hub or router. Figure : Shape of RJ connector. Check the lights on the network hub.
The lights can often show the location of a connection problem. If you are trying to connect to another computer on the network, make sure that computer is turned on. Check the firewall settings on all the computers on the network. The firewall settings may be preventing network access. If you are still experiencing problems with the network, continue with the next step to use the Network and Sharing Center.
Step 2: Using the Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7 The Network and Sharing Center displays the status of the network and allows you to set up network discovery and file sharing across the network. Follow these steps to use the Network and Sharing Center:. Figure : Network and Internet. A green line between the computer name and the network name indicates a good connection to the network.
Figure : Good network connection. Figure : Broken or missing connection. If the connection is broken or missing, click Connect to a network to attempt a network connection. Figure : Network area. In the Homegroup settings window, click Change advanced sharing settings. Here are some solutions to rectify the problems related to internet connection in Windows 7. Turn off Fire Wall or Anti Virus Programs : One problem why internet does not work in a newly installed Windows 7 is that of due to third pary firewall or due to anti virus.
To make sure that the problem is not due to these, try to uninstall firewalls and anti virus programs. If the anti virus program or the firewall is not compatible with Windows 7, then there is a possibility that it an accidentally block the connections to the internet. Disable protection mode : One of the other reasons is that you may not be able to connect to the internet due to IE8 which ships with Windows 7 itself. It is believed that the security settings are set such that it is not possible to connect to the internet or any website at all.
This can be tested by going to Tools , then Internet Options , and clicking on the 'Security tab'. Click on Internet and move the slide bar down to t5he bottom lowest security as shown in the screen shot below. After moving the slider down completely, click on OK. Now close the IE8 and open it again. Now you should be able to connect to the internet.
If it still does not work our, try to uncheck the 'Enable Protected Mode' option. Restart IE8 again and check. Install Drivers in emulation mode : If you are installing Windows 7 on a slightly old computer, then the problem may be due to incompatible drivers. So you can try to update the drivers with latest ones for your network card. Try to install the latest drivers and see if it works. If it still does not work, then you have to install the drivers in compatible mode. I'm also unable to turn on 2 services in Avast.
What is wrong with the system and what can I do to resolve the above basically to get online to check my emails, etc? Apparently, I followed someone's advice to delete and restore a few registry entries related to TCPIP and Winsock and that solved my problem. Finally, the answer I hoped someone would post.
Basically, found two answers but resetting Winsock seems to be the best. The other was to disable the Bonjour service but I'm sticking with the Winsock reset. This is a Window issue. I have this problem on every other PC in house. With different hardware configuration different windows versions.
This is just another stupid Microsoft thing. If you cannot positively detect that the network is connect to the internet, then just don't display anything and confuse simple users.
If you run the troubleshooter, he will tell you that there is no problem, you are connected to the internet, but it does not update the stupid icon. Typical Microsoft, they will write suggestions on how to fix it, but they don't bother to just update the software to fix the problem for good.
And I am sure this takes a programmer 10 minutes and saves system administrators globally thousands of hours of calming down their users. This should have become apparent when you ping www. I too have this problem. I can ping from the command line but unable to access the internet from any browser. I had a virus snapdo which I hope has been eliminated using Malwarebytes and other virus cleaners. I WONDER IF many of the above proposals as solutions have worked simply because the action taken has disabled and then re-enabled the network adapter without this being apparent.
I have an intermittent but annoying problem of lack of internet connection despite good LAN connection on startup of Win 7 across several different computers all Dell, some desktop, some laptop and versions of Win 7 and, in fact, using two different LANs on two different ISPs on opposite sides of the world. It even happens that one computer will have the problem and another not on the same LAN. Equivalent situation never occurs on a machine running XP.
It's just a nuisance which is why I came looking on this site for a "proper" fix. I connect to a VPN often. Just changed it to "obtain automatically This resolved it. A USB wireless adapter has been installed along with its driver. With the wired one disconnected, attempts to connect the wireless adapter have resulted in it being "connected" but without internet access. Both gave the same results. It also was not getting a DNS server address, so I set that up for 8.
For some reason, I decided to reconnect the wired connection. This came online and was "connected" and had internet access. Here is the really strange thing: once the wireless connection showed it had internet access, I unplugged the wired connection again and the wireless STAYED intact, continuing to have internet access. I could confirm that the connection was through the wireless connection by doing a speed test. The modem that the wired connection was using was a substantially slower service less than 5 mpbs compared to nearly 30 mbps.
I spent the last two days fighting this on a users computer and even went as far as wiping the machine back to factory. I finally realized that no matter what I was always getting the same IP address. I had to hunt for it on one of our many DHCP servers but once I found the record I deleted it and now my problem is solved. Office Office Exchange Server.

Proposed as answer by gmakovicka Monday, October 29, PM. Sunday, December 4, PM. Proposed as answer by ShopSpeedHouse. None of the solutions proposed here or anywhere else that I could find worked. The most ridiculously easy solution was to unplug the LAN cable from Port 1 and re-insert into Port 2 with the computer on. Within 10 seconds we had a working internet connection. I also started using my computer this evening and was frustrated. It showed that all connections were good, but could not connect to the internet. The other options still have not worked as well or not as well-I should say. I have tried every option thus far and still no access. We updated our security as well, scanned and detected nothing affecting the software or hardware portions of the computer. I don't know of anything else to do and can't use that computer for internet at all now.
